About Howard Lee Gatch III

Captain Howard Lee Gatch III was born and raised in Charleston, SC. He started boating around the age of five with his father who was an avid boater. He attended and successfully completed his first “Coast Guard Boating Skills and Seamanship Course” as a teen. As Captain Howard said, “after boating my whole young life with my father, it was the only way he would finally let me take the boat out by myself – he was a great man who loved the water and taught me so much.”

Soon after graduating high school and enduring Charleston’s Hurricane Hugo, he move to Miami, Florida. There he attended and graduated Miami Dade College and went on to Florida International University. During college he worked at Miami Beach Marina and 79th Causeway Marina as a dock hand while washing, waxing and cleaning boats on the side. While at Miami Beach Marina he met and befriended many people one of whom hired him as a first mate on his private yacht. Mr. Ray Marchman was the Senior VP of Northern Trust Bank, a lifetime boater and former U.S. Air force pilot. Howard became a part of his family and worked on Mr. Marchman’s three private yachts as a first mate for five years then became his exclusive Captain for the next 10 years. Throughout this time, Captain Howard extensively charted the South Eastern United States, the Florida Keys and the Bahamas.

While working as Mr. Marchman’s Captain, he continued a full time career, as an executive in the music industry working with some of the biggest names in the entertainment business such as KC & the Sunshine Band, No Mercy, Rosie Perez, Scotty Storch, Jenny Jones, Star Search and many more…

While chartering a 70ft yacht in the Key West, he received a call that his father was very sick. The next day he headed back to the Port of Miami and traveled to Michigan to see his father who died within 4 weeks of pancreatic cancer. After living in Miami for 17 years, Captain Gatch decided it was time to go home. That same year he and his wife moved back to Charleston, SC. to spend more time with family and loved ones.

Mr. Gatch is now happily back home closer to family and love ones and continues his love and passion of boating and being on the open seas!
